Rugby Thornfield Indoor Bowls Club’s final gala for 2016 was helping to raise funds for the Under 25s section. The need for funding being highlighted by the fact a coach is needed to take the team to Doncaster on 22nd January to play Hartlepool in the National Double Rink competition.
With the first round completed The Hopefuls and City 4 Ever led with seven points and five teams were in joint third, Chobbock, The 4 C's, The Tossers, Fanny's Fantom Flan Flingers and Mandy's Mob. Heading into the half-time break Chobbock had taken top spot, The 4 C's and Mandy's Mob joint second. The Tossers were fourth and The Hopefuls, City 4 Ever, Fanny's Fantom Flan Flingers and Goodbye 2016 completed the top five in joint fifth. The field started to narrow after the third set of games, The Tossers now led ahead of Mandy's Mob and Goodbye 2016 in joint second. In joint fourth were Chobbock, The Hopefuls and Fanny's Fantom Flan Flingers. A late surge saw Chobbock and Mandy's Mob jump into the lead on 22 points but there can only be one winner so Mandy's Mob (Mandy Dahlgren, Chris Knapp, Pat Dahlgren and Colin Knapp) took top spot with a superior shots tally. Two points behind in third spot were The 4 C's and joint fourth went to The Tossers and City 4 Ever. The Club’s penultimate gala of 2016 was in aid of Breast Cancer, a mix of pink and Christmassy clothing taking to the carpet.
"X Rail" led the pack after the first round of games with "Snowballs" and "Fanny's Fantom Flan Flingers" joint second. "The Hotshots" and "Twerking Turkeys" in joint fourth completed the top five. Heading into the half-time break "X Rail" still led, "Snowballs" took sole ownership of second spot, "Twerking Turkeys" moved into third, "The Hotshots" fourth with "Fanny's Fantom Flan Flingers" dropping down to fifth. Three rounds gone and "X Rail" extended their lead ahead of "Snowballs". "Fanny's Fantom Flan Flingers" jumped back into third place, "Twerking Turkeys" dropped to fourth while "The Xmas Baubles" joined "The Hotshots" in joint fifth. With the bowls packed away "X Rail" (Pat Quirke, Trev Evans, Ian Kendall and Bruce Truman) led from start to finish to sit atop the Christmas tree with 29 points. "Snowballs" finished in second spot four points behind the winners and two ahead of "Fanny's Fantom Flan Flingers" in third. "The Hotshots" Finished fourth on 20 points while "The Stoke Lot" sneak in the top five. There was spooky goings on at Thornfield Indoors as beings shuffled onto the green to raise money to help in the battle against Parkinsons. It was good to see a selection of players from the local support group of Parkinsons taking part.
With the first round of games complete “Beyond our Ken” had a one point lead over the six teams in joint second, “The Mish Mashers”, “Coffin Dodgers”, “Parkies 2”, “Fanny’s Fantom Flan Flingers”, “Team Bax” and “Daventry Dimwits”. Heading into the midway break “Beyond our Ken” still led the way, one point clear of “The Mish Mashers”, “Parkies 2” and “Team Bax” in joint second. Fifth place, a point back, were “Fanny’s Fantom Flan Flingers”. After the penultimate set of games “The Mish Mashers” had joined “Beyond our Ken” in first place, “Parkies 2” were third a point behind, fourth place was held by “Team Bax” with “Only Ghosting” in fifth place. With all four rounds over and the spirits getting ready to lay to rest for another year the gala winners were “The Mish Mashers” aka Mandy Dahlgren, Pat Dahlgren and Colin Knapp with 28 points. “Team Bax” were second on 27 points, 26 points secured third spot for “Parkies 2”. “Only Ghosting” were fourth with 24 points, one ahead of “Beyond our Ken” in fifth. Thornfield kicked off their charity gala series under the watchful eye of a trainee guide dog, wondering why he wasn’t allowed to chase the bowls, raising funds for Guide Dogs for the Blind. Twelve teams took to the carpet looking for early season glory.
With one round of games played five teams lead the way on 6 points, they were “Take Heart”, “You Bears”, “Sue’s Boys”, “Peaky Blinders” and “Colin’s Four”. “X Rail” completed the group of first game winners but were a point behind. Heading into the midway break “X Rail” had taken the lead with 13 points, one ahead of “Take Heart”, “Peaky Blinders” and “Sue’s Boys” in joint second. In joint fifth were “Four Dog Paws”, “BBBC”, “You Bears” and “Colin’s Fours”. After three rounds “X Rail” still lead, one point clear of “Sue’s Boys” who in turn were a point ahead of “Peaky Blinders”. “BBBC” were fourth with fifth being shared by “Four Dog Paws” and “You Bears”. Last round victories saw “Sue’s Boys” and “Peaky Blinders” both leapfrog “X Rail”, “Sue’s Boys” (Nigel Malka, Sue and Jim Dean) took the crown with 25 points, “Peaky Blinders” one point behind while “X Rail” had to settle for third on 22 points. Fourth place was shared by “Four Dog Paws” and “Take Heart”. The final charity gala of the winter season saw 16 teams raising funds for the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance.
One round in and there was a six way tie for top spot, “Yellow Copter”, “Mellow Yellows”, “Ancient & Modern”, “Yellow Rose of Texas”, “Fly By Night” and “The Snowballs” all had seven points. Heading into the half-time break “Mellow Yellows” had taken a one point lead over “Cobblers”, “Yellow Rose of Texas” and “Ancient & Modern” in joint second, “Fanny's Fantom Flan Flingers” completed the top five. With the final set of games to play “Cobblers” had joined “Mellow Yellows” in first place, three points clear of “Yellow Rose of Texas” and “Ancient & Modern” in joint third. In joint fifth were “Fanny's Fantom Flan Flingers”, “Misfits” and “Break Free”. A thrilling final round saw just two points separating the top three, it was “Mellow Yellows” (Mandy Dahlgren, Sue Henderson, Pat Dahlgren and Bob Henderson) who took the title with 25 points, 24 points secured “Cobblers” second while “Ancient & Modern” had to settle for third with 23 points. Fourth place went to “Fly By Night” with 19 points, one point ahead of “Nonames” and “Break Free” in joint fifth. The penultimate charity gala in the club's winter season was in aid of Arthritis Research, a full set of 16 teams took to the carpet to help raise funds.
A perfect game by “Diversity” saw them take all 8 points and top spot, one point clear of “The Young Chicks”, “X Rail” and “Red Rugby Rogues” in joint second. “MA'AM” and “Thornfield Thunderers” completed the top five with six points. Heading into the midway break “X Rail” and “The Young Chicks” were joint first, one point ahead of “Red Rugby Rogues” and “Thornfield Thunderers” in joint third. A point further back in fifth place were “Plonkers”. With plenty of cakes available for sale, the bowlers returned to the battle refreshed and well-fed. Heading into the final set of games there was a three way tie for top spot “Plonkers”, “Red Rugby Rogues” and “X Rail” all on 20 points. Fourth spot was held by “Thornfield Thunderers” with 19 points, while “The Young Chicks” were in fifth three points further behind. After the last games were finished two teams had 27 points, since there can only be one winner the title was decided on shots scored. With 42 shots “Plonkers” aka Bev Bale, Paul Bale, Dave Sands and Lloyd Bale took the crown ahead of “Red Rugby Rogues” who scored 38 shots. In third place on 26 points were “Thornfield Thunderers”, 21 points secured joint fourth for “The Young Chicks” and “X Rail”. A special mention goes to the bottom placed team of Darren French, Andy Gordon, Matt and Luke Walker, playing as “The Underdogs”. These were complete rookies who had had only a couple of roll ups but took part in the spirit of charity. The latest charity gala at Rugby Thornfield Indoor Bowls Club was in aid of Meningitis Now. Fourteen teams took to the carpet all trying to clinch top spot.
With the first round of games completed “I Haven't a Clue” and “The Inbetweeners” were in joint first, one point clear of “The Dav Chavs” and “The Newbies” in joint third. Fifth place was shared between “Just Trying”, “Rail Roaders” and “Sue's Mob”. Heading into the half-time break “The Inbetweeners” took a one point lead over “The Dav Chavs” and “The Newbies”, “I Haven't a Clue”, “Just Trying” and “Sue's Mob” in joint fourth completed the leading pack. Three game down and “The Newbies” took top spot, two points ahead of second place “The Inbetweeners”. “I Haven't a Clue”, and “The Dav Chavs” shared third place and in joint fifth were “Rail Roaders” and “Sue's Mob”. With the last bowls delivered three teams were tied on 19 points, “Just Trying” and “The Newbies” were joined by “Fanny's Fabulous Flan Flingers” who put on a very late surge. There can be only one winner so it came down to total shots scored, with 23 shots Pat Quirke, Andrew Smith, Bruce Truman and Nigel Hewitson aka “Fanny's Fabulous Flan Flingers” took the title, “Just Trying” were second with 20 shots and third went to “The Newbies” with 16 shots. Fourth place went to “The Inbetweeners” and in joint fifth were “The Dav Chavs” and “The Young Chicks”. A nearly full field of 14 teams arrived at Rugby Thornfield Indoor Bowls Club to take part in the Gala raising funds for the British Heart Foundation.
With the first round complete “Wasps” and “Floral Dancers” held a one point lead over “Mission Impossible”, “Bits n Pieces” and “X Rail” who were joint third. “Mission Impossible” moved to top spot heading into the half-time break, a point ahead of “Specksavers” and “Floral Dancers” in joint second. Three points further back in joint fourth were “Bits n Pieces”, “X Rail” and “Wasps”. The lead changed hands again heading into the final round of games, “Specksavers” in pole position but three teams were hot on their heels in joint second “Wasps”, “Bits n Pieces” and “X Rail”. “Mission Impossible” completed the top five. A perfect eight point game saw “X Rail” (Pat Quirke, Trevor Evans, Alec Gallimore and Bruce Truman) storm to top of the pile winning the gala with 24 points. “Bits n Pieces” finished second on 23 points, third place went to “Specksavers” with 20 points, one point ahead of “Mission Impossible” and “Floral Dancers” in joint fourth. On Sunday 14th February the club is again hosting the EBYDS Event, where promising youngsters from the region take part in singles and skills challenges to try and qualify for the EBYDS finals later in the year. Thornfields first gala of 2016 was in aid of the PSP Association, this charity is dedicated to helping people with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy and Cortico Basal Degeneration. Both those conditions are terminal degenerative brain diseases with no known treatment. With the club also playing in both the Wessex League and Under 25s Double Rink on the same day the field was limited to twelve teams.
With the first round of games completed “Knapp Jacks” and “X Rail” were in joint first, one point ahead of “Speckled Hen”, “Four Skips” and “Bob and the Three Graces” in joint third. “Four Skips” took control of top spot heading into the midway break. “Knapp Jacks” were second, “PSP” third and “Pic n Mix” fourth. In joint fifth were “Speckled Hen”, “X Rail”, “Oliver's Army” and “Bob and the Three Graces”. After the third set of games were finished “Pic n Mix”, “PSP” and “Knapp Jacks” were tied in first, a quirk of the fixtures meant “Pic n Mix” and “PSP” would meet in their final game. A couple of points back in fourth were “X Rail”, who in turn were a point ahead of “Oliver's Army”. “Knapp Jacks” (Chris Knapp, Alan Jackson, Michael Jackson and Colin Knapp) scored a perfect eight points to take the top spot with 25 points. “Mix n Match” were second on 23 points, 22 points secured “X Rail” third spot. “Four Skips” finished fourth on 20 points, one point ahead of fifth place “PSP”. The Club finished 2015 off with a gala to raise funds for their Under 25s Section. It was also a celebration as the Under 25s are through to a quarter final encounter against Wellingborough in the David Cornwell Trophy (Under 25s Double Rink), with most of the team playing in the gala.
“Wycliffe Girls & Boys” led the way after the first round of games, one point ahead of “X Rail” and “Under 250s” in joint second. “RIP Lemmy”, “Tone's Mob”, “Mandy's Fours” and “Shortest Tonight” in joint fourth completed the leading pack. Half-time saw “X Rail” and “Under 250s” locked in first place, “RIP Lemmy” were third, “Wycliffe Girls & Boys” fourth and in joint fifth were “Gwynn's Lads”, “It's Not My Fault”, “Tone's Mob” and “Mix & Match”. After three rounds “Under 250s” held a two point lead over “X Rail”. “Wycliffe Girls & Boys”. “Gwynn's Lads” and “X Rail” were joint third with “Mix & Match” completing the top five. With the last bowls delivered “Under 250s” consisting of J Lever, Becky Lever, M Woodward and Brian Lever, held on to top spot, just one point clear of “Wycliffe Girls & Boys” in second on 23 points. Joint third with 20 points were “Mix & Match” and “X Rail”, “It's Not My Fault” took fifth place with 18 points. |
