Rugby Thornfield's charity gala season rolled into December and the festive spirit took hold as twelve teams lined up to raise funds for Myton Hospice.
Two teams led the way after the first round of games, “Nappies” and “Wallies”. A point behind them in joint third were “Yellow Snowballs”, “X Rail” and “Niceicles”. Heading into the half-time entertainment “Yellow Snowballs”, “Wallies” and “Niceicles” were tied in top spot with “Rail Rascals” a point back in fourth. Fifth place was shared by “Speckled Hen” and “Nappies”. During the half-time break the players and spectators were treated to some singing and dancing by a group of local youngsters. They later went around with a bucket to collect donations for the charity, the team consisted of Evelyn Wheeler, Hannah Smyth, Jenny Chater, Neave Hamlin and Paige Davis. With the entertainment over the bowls restarted and again there was a tie for first, “Rail Rascals” and “Niceicles”. “Pic n Mix” were third with “Yellow Snowballs” and “X Rails” completing the top five in joint fifth. The end arrived and one team had taken itself to the top of the tree: Jan Mitchell, Sue Henderson, Lesley Hartopp and Bob Henderson aka “Niceicles” finished with 26 points. Second place on 21 points were “Yellow Snowballs”. “X Rail” and “Rail Rascals” were joint third on 20 points, while joint fifth on 18 points were “Wallies”, “Bill's Lot” and “Pic n Mix”. Pudsymania hit Rugby Thornfield Indoor Bowls Club as 14 teams battled it out to see who would be crowned winners of the Children in Need Gala 2015.
After the first round of games “Colins Comets” and “X Rail” had recorded a perfect eight points to lead “Kiddywinks” and “Take Heart” by one point. A point further back in joint fifth were “Nappers” and “Mix n Match”. “X Rail” were three points clear heading into the half-time break, “Kiddywinks” and “Mix n Match” were joint second with “Nappers” in fourth and “Atherley Widowers” fifth. With one set of games left to play “X Rail” still led but “Mix n Match” were now just one point behind them. “Take Heart” were in third place while “Kiddywinks”, “Atherley Widowers”, “Colins Comets”, “The Floral Dance” and “Nappers” were all joint fourth. The gala came down to the wire, “X Rail” and “Mix n Match” both finishing with 25 points. There can only be one winner so it then came down to shots scored which meant this years winners were “Mix n Match” (John and Rita Courtney, Phil Blundell and Mark Courtney) having scored two shots more. Three teams were level in joint third to complete the top five, “Kiddywinks”, “The Floral Dance” and “Nappers”. A special mention goes to one of the clubs youngest members, Evelyn Wheeler, who helped boost fund by selling home made cakes during the afternoon. A quiet Sunday afternoon was disturbed by all manner of strange beings descending upon Rugby Thornfield as the club held its Halloween Gala. Twelve teams shambled up and down the green hoping to become the spooktacular champions.
The first round saw two sides register perfect scores, “Wasps” and “1+3” leading the way. “Speckled Hen” were one point behind with “3 plus 1” a further point back. Heading into the half-time break “Speckled Hen”, “3 plus 1” and “1+3” were four points clear of “Wasps” and “DR-sum-4-sum” with “Hooly Goolys” completing the top five. “3 plus 1” led “1+3” by a point after three rounds had been played. “Speckled Hen” and “DR-sum-4-sum” were in joint third and “Hooly Goolys” still fifth. After a fun afternoon “3 plus 1” (Mandy Dahlgren, Pat Schofield, Pat Dahlgren and Colin Knapp) remained top on 28 points, “1+3” second on 23 points, “Pumpkin Patch” and “DR-sum-4-sum” joint third with 19 points and in joint fifth on 17 points were “Speckled Hen” and “Hooly Goolys”. The Club kicked off their charity galas for the 2015/6 season with the gala in aid of the Guide Dogs for the Blind. A full set of 16 teams, raffle, name the dog and other activities helped to raise over £500 for the charity. A couple of Guide Dog puppies also paid a visit to show people what their effort on the day is all for.
After the first round of games “GDW” led the way with 8 points, one ahead of “3 & Me”, “Yellow Peril”, “Corny A” and “Who Let the Dogs Out”. “Haters say No”, “The Old Dogs” and “Guide Frogs for the Daft” completed the teams that started with a win. Heading into the midway break and an auction of soft drink packs kindly provided by Britvic there was a three way tie for top spot, “Yellow Peril”, “3 & Me” and “The Old Dogs” all on 13 points. “Haters Say No” with 11 points and “GDW” on 10 completed the top five. Refreshed from the break “Haters Say No” raced into the lead, one point ahead of “3 & Me”. In joint third were “Yellow Peril” and “GDW”, while “The Old Dogs” and “Who Let the Dogs Out” were joint fifth. With the last woods bowled “Yellow Peril” (Bob & Sue Henderson and Mandy & Pat Dahlgren) had retaken the lead, earning the top dog crown with 23 points. “GDW” and “Who Let the Dogs Out” were joint second on 22 points. Fourth place went to “The Old Dogs” and “3 & Me” and “Haters Say No” in joint fifth completed the lead group. Rugby Thornfield Indoor Bowls Club held their final charity gala of the 2014/5 season. A full compliment of 16 teams took to the carpet to raise funds for the Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance. Bowls Daventry, an organisation made up of the various bowls groups in Daventry (indoor, outdoor, shortmat and disabled bowls) brought three teams of their own and some additional items to be auctioned (see later for how you can get an EBA International blazer and a signed Bowls England Commonwealth Games shirt).
A perfect game saw “Fly by Night” take the early lead, a point clear of “Speckled Hen” and “Whatever” in joint second. In joint fourth were “Terrible 4”, “Dambusters” and “Vikings”. Heading into the half-time break “Fly by Night” again registered a perfect game. “Whatever” were in second place with “The Canaries” and “Past & Present” joint third, “Noname” completed the top five. Fully refreshed “Fly by Night” dropped their first points of the evening but still held a one point lead over second place “Whatever”, who in turn were a point clear of “Past & Present”. Joint fourth was held by “The Canaries” and “Daffy Ducks”. “Fly by Night” (Julia Scott, Sandy Boulton, Roy Scott and Ron Boulton) registered their third clean sweep to finish four points clear of “Past & Present” in second place. “Whatever” somehow ended in the top three despite not scoring a single point in their last game, joint fourth were “Noname”, “Middle Newbold” and “The Canaries”. Special mention goes to last place “Volunteers” (Barry & Judy Gardner, Gordon Chamberlain and Barry Sheasby), as the name suggests the team consisted largely of Air Ambulance volunteers. Bowls Daventry are currently auctioning a Bowls England shirt from the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, signed by the team. Also the EBA (English Bowls Association) International Blue Blazer awarded to Stuart Thomas in 2000. All money raised will be going to the Air Ambulance, both currently have bids of £100 (as of 9th April). Bowls Daventry is an organisation made up of the various bowls groups within Daventry to promote bowls within Daventry and hopefully reverse the trend of falling numbers of participants. The penultimate gala of Rugby Thornfield Indoors' season was a twelve team affair with all funds going to the Arthritis Care charity.
With the opening round of games completed three teams were tied for top spot on seven points “3 Amigos & Steve”, “The Young & The Old” and “Double Ds”. “The Foursome” were a point behind in fourth while “Welsh All Stars” were fifth with five points. Heading into the half-time break “The Young & The Old” held a slender lead over “The Foursome” and “Double Ds” in joint second. “3 Amigos & Steve” had slipped to fourth while “Mix & Match” came from the chasing pack to claim fifth spot. The lead changed hands again as “Double Ds” moved into top spot, second place was “The Foursome” with “The Young and The Old” now third. The top five was completed with “Mix & Match” in fourth and “3 Amigos & Steve” in fifth. A perfect eight point game saw “The Foursome” (Mandy Dahlgren, Chris Knapp, Pat Dahlgren & Colin Knapp) storm to the front with a five point gap between them and “Double Ds” and “Mix & Match” in joint second. A further four points behind in fourth were “The Young & The Old” with “Welsh All Stars” just behind them in fifth. This year Comic Relief weekend and Mothers Day clashed so only ten sides took to the carpet for the Gala in aid of Comic Relief and some of those teams played as triples rather than full rinks.
“Tip & Run” held a one point lead over “Alfie & the E Numbers” and “Bowling Funny” in joint second. “Speckled Hen” and “Red Nose Rejects” completed the top five. After two rounds were completed “Tip & Run” still held onto top spot, “Alfie & the E Numbers” were second, “Speckled Hen” were third and “The Misfits” fourth. In joint fifth were “Four Minus One” and “Bowling Funny”. “Speckled Hen” jumped into the lead after the half time break. “Tip & Run” and “Alfie & the E Number” were joint second, “Misfits” held fourth spot and “Bowling Funny” completed the top five. With the final games completed “Speckled Hen” (Keith Oakes, Bill Brown and Colin Hall) held on to first place with 24 points. 21 points secured second place for “Tip & Run”, one point clear of “Bowling Funny” in third who in turn were a point ahead of fourth place “Alfie & the E Numbers”. “The Misfits” completed the top five with 17 points. The remaining teams were “Four Minus One” (15 pts), “Red Nose Rejects” (14 pts), “Wasps” (13), “Red Arrers” (8) and “The Good Lads” last with 6 points. Rugby Thornfield Indoors Bowls Club added another charity gala to it's line up with the inaugural running of the gala in aid of the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund.
“Rainbow Warriors” and “Mo Pat TT” led the way after the first round of games, both teams picking up the maximum eight points. “You Need to Grow Some Bowls” and “Bob's Your Uncle” were a point further behind, while “Four Musketeers”, “Old Speckled Hen”, “Whatever” and “Red Mist on the City” completed the list of teams who made a winning start. Heading into the midway break “Old Speckled Hen” and “Bob's Your Uncle” moved into joint first. “Four Musketeers” were in third place. In joint fourth were “Rainbow Warriors” and “You Need to Grow Some Bowls”. With three rounds played just three points separated the top six sides. Leading the pack were “Rainbow Warriors” and “You Need to Grow Some Bowls”. “Old Speckled Hen” and “Mo Pat TT” were a point behind, “Bob's Your Uncle” a further point back and “Red Mist on the City” completing the top six. “You Need to Grow Some Bowls” (Jennifer, Derek, Darren and Tom Wheeler) held on to secure first place with 25 points. Joint second on 23 points were “Mo Pat TT” and “Red Mist on the City”. “Bob's Your Uncle” took fourth spot, fifth went to “Rainbow Warriors”, with “Whatever” sneaking into sixth. Special mention goes to “The Professionals”, a team of non-bowlers who took on the bowlers. They might have finished bottom but they enjoyed the gala and helped raise over £500 on the day. Thornfield's green carpet was swept with a sea of red as 14 teams took part in the gala raising funds for the British Heart Foundation.
After the first round of games were completed “Bad Pennies” led the way on seven points but five teams trailed just one point behind; “Ladies in Red and Bob”, “Odd Fellows”, “Tommy and the Pacemakers”, “Chelsea” and “Red Bloomers”. Halftime saw “Ladies in Red and Bob” take a one shot lead over “Odd Fellows” and “Tommy and the Pacemakers”. “Misfits” and “Bad Pennies” were fourth and fifth respectively. Refreshed by the break “Ladies in Red and Bob” doubled their lead over second place “Tommy and the Pacemakers”. Third place was shared between “The Redliners” and “Odd Fellows”, while “Red Bloomers” completed the top five. With the last woods bowled “Ladies in Red and Bob” (Mandy Dahlgren, Sue Henderson, Pat Dahlgren and Bob Henderson) held onto first place, two points clear of “The Redliners” who in turn were two clear of third place “Red Bloomers”. Joint fourth were “The Mayans” and “Tommy and the Pacemakers”, with “Odd Fellows” and “Hope in our Heart” in joint sixth. The random draw lucky loser prize went to Sue Smith, Jane Reddington, Steve Smith and Paul Reddington, while the wooden spoon went to Joy Jones, Jim Cook, George Atwell and Jim Moss. Thornfield's first gala of 2015 saw twelve teams take to the green to raise funds for the Rugby Talking Newspaper.
Two points separated the top six teams with “Team Preps” leading the way. “Colin's Boys” and “Super Duper Newspapers” were joint second while fourth was shared by “The Talkies”, “Rainbows” and “Ole Codgers”. At the half-time break “Super Duper Newspapers” held a one point point lead over “Colin's Boys”, who in turn were a point ahead of “Ole Codgers” in third place. “Leos” and “Uprisers” completed the top five in fourth and fifth respectively. With one round of games left “Super Duper Newspapers” (Jan Mitchell, Sue Henderson, Les Hartopp & Bob Henderson) held a slender lead over “Ole Codgers”. “Colin's Boys” and “Leos” were joint third and “Tacky” fifth. 27 points gave “Super Duper Newspapers” a six point victory margin over “Tacky” and “Leos” in joint second. “Talkies” and “Ole Codgers” were a point further back in joint fourth. Two teams were locked in a battle for the footnote award, both “Plonkers” and “Bluebirds and Bustards” were tied on six points each but “Bluebirds and Bustards” (Mandy Dahlgren, Tony Hoffman, Pat Dahlgren and Ian Gibbs) scored one shot less to secure bottom spot. |
