Rugby Thornfield Indoor BC kicked off their charity gala season for 2019/20 with twelve teams taking part in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. After the first round of games had finished three teams were joint top with seven points, "Hardly Good", "Keep Smiling No Matter What" and "Shreks Brothers". "Cross Rail" were a point behind in fourth place with "Fannies Fantom Flan Flingers" a further point back in fifth. Heading into the midway break "Keep Smiling No Matter What" had taken sole charge of top spot, a point clear of "Hardly Good" and "Fannies Fantom Flan Flingers" in joint second. Two point off the lead were "Shreks Brothers" in fourth while joint fifth were "The Young Ones" and "The Wreckers". Half-time entertainment was provided by Rugbylele, a Rugby based ukulele band.
Back to the bowls and "Shreks Brothers" moved into top spot, three points ahead of "Keep Smiling No Matter What". Joint third, a point behind second place, were "The Young Ones" and "4m8s". They in turn were a point clear of "The Wreckers" and "Fannies Fantom Flan Flingers" in joint fifth. The final set of games saw both "Shreks Brothers" and "Keep Smiling No Matter What" pick up seven point, meaning "Shreks Brothers" (aka Brian Webber, Mark Noble, Henry Neal and Paul Sharp) won the gala with 25 points, "Keep Smiling No Matter What" were second with 22 points. On 18 points in joint third were "Hardly Good" and "Here We Are Again" with fifth place going to "4m8s" on 17 points. The club held it’s penultimate charity gala of the winter season, this time raising funds for the NET Patient Foundation. This charity supports people who have neuroendocrine cancer.
Two teams held a one point lead after the first round of games “X-Rail” and “Jaguar Ladies”. “Odd Bunch”, “Pat's Pummelers”, “Fly By Night” and “The Blue Brothers” were all joint third. The field scattered heading into the halfway break, each team one point ahead of their nearest rival. First place went to “Pat's Pummelers”, “The Blue Brothers” were second and “Take Heart” third. “We Know Nothing” held fourth spot while “X-Rail” and “Here Again” were in joint fifth. With three rounds played “Take Heart” jumped into top spot with a perfect game. “Pat's Pummelers” and “The Blue Brothers” now had to settle for joint second, “X-Rail” were fourth and “Odd Bunch” fifth. After the last bowls had been played “The Blue Brothers” finally hit top spot to win the gala, two points clear of “X-Rail” who in turn were two points ahead of “Take Heart” and “Pat's Pummelers” in joint third, “Fannys Fantom Flan Flingers” completed the top five. Thornfield held their first charity gala of 2019 with a full set of sixteen teams taking to green to raise funds for the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance. With cake sales and name the teddy the afternoon raised just under £380 for the charity.
Four teams were in joint first after the initial set of games, "Here Again", "Ever Hopefuls", "Misfits" and "Tina's Lot" all on 7 points. "Uno Our Name", "One For A Reason" and "X Rail" were a point behind with "The Hoverers" another point back completing the group of teams to win their opening games. Heading into the midway break "X Rail" joined "Tina's Lot" in joint first. Third place two points behind were "Misfits", "Ever Hopefuls" were in fourth with joint fifth going to "Uno Our Name", "One For A Reason" and "Odds & Sods". "X Rail" took sole control of top spot after the third round of games, just one point clear of "Tina's Lot" in second. Two points further back were "Misfits" who were a point ahead of fourth place "One For A Reason". Five spot was shared between "Odds & Sods" and "Odd Bunch". Pat Quirke, Ron Davies, Ian Kendall and Bruce Truman aka "X Rail" took all eight points in their final game to win the gala with 28 points. "Tina's Lot" had to settle with second place on 25 points, two points ahead of "One For A Reason" in third. 20 points secured fourth spot for "Odd Bunch", while one point further back in joint fifth were "Misfits" and "Odds & Sods". The club finished 2018 with the Christmas Gala in aid of the junior section. Sixteen teams took part in the festive fun, all trying to become the Christmas No 1.
Odds n Sods and EBowler led the way after the first set of games one point clear of the other teams that also won their opening game: One Missing, Beauty & The Beasts, Simply The Worst, Uno Our Name, HARM and Wild Bunch. The second round of matches helped to spread the teams, EBowler held on to first place, Simply The Worst moved into second while One Missing dropped into third, each a point behind the team above them. Three points further back in joint fourth were Fanny's Fantom Flan Flingers, Odds n Sods and We Put The Pressure On. EBowler opened their lead to three points ahead of Odds n Sods. Simply The Worst and Fanny's Fantom Flan Flingers were joint third, joint fifth going to We Put The Pressure On and One Missing. With the bowls finished for the year EBowler held onto first place with 26 points. Second place went to Odds n Sods, two point behind the champions. 21 points secured joint third for Simply The Worst and Fanny's Fantom Flan Flingers, Beauty & The Beasts finished fourth with 19 points with Sleigh Riders and We Put The Pressure On three points back in joint fifth. The penultimate gala of 2018 at Rugby Thornfield Indoors Bowls Club was in aid of the Rugby Foodbank. A full 16 teams, including some new bowlers, took to the green for a fun afternoon of bowls, all for a good cause.
With the first set of games gone Two + Two lead the way with a perfect 8 point start. In joint second, one point behind, were Here Again!!, Spring Chickens and X-Rail. Odds and Sods, The Motley Crew and Try Harder were joint fifth with 6 points and Nearly Easter completed the list of teams with an opening win on 5 points. Heading into the midway break The Motley Crew had moved into the lead, one point ahead of X-Rail. Two points further back in third were Nearly Easter with Two + Two, Spring Chickens, Askit's Crew and 3 Jumpers + 1 Hat joint fourth a further two points back. X-Rail became the third team to lead the pack after the third round of games. One point behind were Nearly Easter who were in turn a point ahead of third place The Motley Crew. Fourth place was held by Odds and Sods who trailed third by 3 points. The top five was completed by The Jaguars and The Forties, a point behind fourth place. A good result ensured that X-Rail (Pat Quirke, Trev Evans, Ian Kendall and Bruce Truman) held on to top spot with 27 points. The Motley Crew moved into second place, two points behind the leaders. In joint third place, on 21 points, were Odds and Sods and Nearly Easter. Joint fifth, scoring 20 points, went to The Jaguars, Santa's Old Helpers and The Young Ones. On Friday 21st December and Friday 18th January the club is holding bowls drives starting at 6:30pm. The next gala is on 30th December in aid of the Under 25s Section with the next charity gala being Sunday 3rd February in aid of the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance. The second charity gala of Rugby Thornfield’s winter season saw a full set of sixteen teams raising money for Parkinsons, special mention goes to the two teams of people with Parkinsons who enjoy coming to the club for a weekly session showing bowls really is a sport for all.
After the opening round of games three teams were tied on seven points Howard's Bluebells, Mary's Blue Jays and Hot Shots. In joint fourth with six points were Odds & Sods, TLS and Uno Our Name. Heading into the midway break there were now four teams sharing first place Hot Shots, Howard's Bluebells, Odds & Sods and TLS all on thirteen points. Farmers Four and Mary's Blue Jays were joint fifth, four points behind the leaders. Odds & Sods moved a point clear of Howard's Bluebells and TLS with one set of games to play, their final game would be against TLS. Hot Shots were in fourth place with Fismits, X-Rail and The Incredibles in joint fifth. With all games completed Odds & Sods (Arnold Bax, Tony Hoffman, Yvonne Bromfield and Maureen Edwards) held firm to win the gala with 27 points, Howard's Bluebells secured second place with 26 points. Joint third on 21 points were X-Rail, Hot Shots and The Incredibles. Thornfield’s galas are open to all, members and non-members, they are preceded by a two hour bowl for free session where you can learn the basics if you’ve never played before. The next gala is on Sunday 9th December in aid of the Rugby Food Bank. The club is also holding a series of Bowls Drives where anyone can come along and take part in a fun two hour session of bowling, the next one of those is on Friday 16th November at 6:30pm. First up is the standard season opener, the Guide Dog Gala.
Only one team registered a perfect score in the first set of games The Mix, three teams shared joint second with 7 points Fab Four, Mandy's Mob and Odds & Sods. A further point behind in fifth place were Tina's Crew. Heading into the halfway break Odds & Sods moved into the lead, a point clear of Fab Four, a further point behind were The Mix with Tina's Crew and Mandy's Mob in fourth and fifth respectively. Odds & Sods extended their lead after the third round, Fab Four still on their coattails. Lucky 7 moved up into the top five, The Mix dropped down to fourth with Tina's Crew now in fifth spot. A show result in the final set of games saw Odds & Sods fail to pick up any points which enabled Fab Four (I Amos, S Blackshaw, T Butterworth and B Weston) to win the gala with 24 points. Lucky 7 finished second, two points behind and a point ahead of The Mix in third. Odds & Sods stayed on 20 points in fourth with Newbies plus two finishing fifth, two points behind. Rugby Thornfield Indoor Bowls Club played host to a charity match featuring eight teams, four representing Myton Hospice and four Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance. Each team played four games of seven ends, one against each of the teams playing for the opposite charity. Three points were given for a win, one for a draw with a bonus point for each end won.
After the first round of games WNAA had won three and drawn the other giving them an overall 26-13 lead. With the first half of the match completed Myton took one win but WNAA again had won three, the overall advantage now eleven. The teams representing Myton Hospice could again only manage one win to WNAA’s three, the scores 68-51. After the final round of games Myton could only manage another win but just missed out on a second. Myton Hospice finished with 64 points but the overall winners were Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance with 95 points, if the match had gone purely on shots the result would’ve been 136-77 to WNAA. With three wins out of four Carol Ryan, Keith Oakes, Stuart Miles and Ian Box were the highest scoring rink for Myton Hospices, making them the Myton Champions. The Air Ambulance Champions with four wins out of four went to Colin Knapp, Pat & Mandy Dahlgren and Chris Knapp. Special thanks go to Rugby School, Hafele, Jumbo Games and Next for providing prizes for the raffle. A big thank you to all the players and Rugby Thornfield for ensuring the game went ahead. A total of £385 (rounded up to nearest £5) was raised, which means each charity will receive £192.50 towards their excellent work. A Swiss Pairs competition will be held on Sunday 21st October, noon start.
Maximum of 16 teams, £10 per team (£7 for rink fees, £3 goes to prize money). Each team will play 5 games of 4 ends. The first round is drawn, this is then followed by matching the result so that winners play together and the losers play together over the next 4 rounds. Over the 5 rounds there can only be one team that can win all 5 games. Results will be based on ends won which therefore allow teams to win, lose or draw. At the end of the game one point is a point is given for every end won, so a team can gain 0 to 4 points. After the five rounds the team with the most points win two-thirds of the prize money, the team finishing second gets one-third of the prize money. In the case of multiple teams with the same number of points the prize money will be shared between those teams. Interested players should contact a member of staff. The club is proud to be hosting the finals of the Denny and Yetton over the weekend of 21st/22nd April.
