Competition Winners 2015/16
The clubs finals weekend again provided two days of twists, joy and despair.
The Ladies Championship saw Jane Redfern take on Bev Bale. Bale started well but eight shots in four ends gave Redfern the advantage. However that proved to be Redfern's final tally as a series of singles and doubles, with a treble thrown in, saw Bale take the crown 21-8. In the Mens Championship Matt Lever took a 6-0 lead over Darren Ward, who levelled with a pair of singles and doubles. Ward then scored back to back fours to take the lead, Lever tried to fightback but Ward held him at bay to secure a 21-12 win.
Moving on to the Two Woods, Jane Redfern was again taking part, this time against Carol Ryan. After five ends the scores were level on three all, Redfern scored three doubles to a single in reply to open up a 9-4 lead. Ryan staged a comeback, trailing 11-9 after 14 ends. Six shots over four ends put the game out of Ryan's reach, Redfern winning 17-9. Howard Wilkins and Oliver Fowler were the participants in the Mens Two Woods final, after exchanging shots the score was 5-5 after six ends. Four singles helped to take Fowler 9-6 in the lead. He then went on to score three singles and three doubles, Fowler taking the title 18-6.
The Ladies Pairs saw Elaine Taylor & Maureen Edwards play Jean Barnett & Yvonne Bromfield. After seven ends Bromfield led 8-3. with three ends to play they had opened that up to 18-11 but Edwards scored a five and a single to go into the final end just one behind. Trailing Edwards had to play with weight and held three as a result, Bromfield tried to get at least second wood but couldn't do it. Taylor and Edwards completed the comeback to win 20-18. The line up for the Mens Pairs had a late amendment, Roy Scott stepping in for the injured Howard Wilkins to partner Matt Lever. Their opponents were Oliver Fowler and Liam Pearcey. A second end six helped Lever reach the sixth end 11-2 up. Pearcey fought back to trail by one shot after 11 ends. Scott and Lever took control again, building the lead and holding off a late rally to win 23-18.
Vicky Burt, Jane Redfern & Pat Bax played Bev Bale, Abbie Ward & Maureen Edwards in the Ladies Triples. Neither side could break clear, the game reached 11 ends ten all. A four on the twelfth end followed by a couple of singles gave Edwards the advantage and they held on to it to win 19-12. For the Mens Triples Oliver Fowler, Jordan Ward & Liam Pearcey took on Steve Merrett, Jordan Merrett (subbing for Keith Mason who was unable to play due to work commitments) & Darren Ward. Six ends in and Pearcey held a one shot advantage but the Ward trio dominated the next six to lead 13-6. With three ends to play Ward help a ten shot advantage, two ends later that had been halved but Pearcey and co could only pick up a single giving Ward and co a 17-13 victory.
The Ladies Fours pitted Sandy Boulton, Bev Mitchell, Jean Hagues and Pat Bax against Abbie Ward, Jean Barnett, Yvonne Bromfield and Maureen Edwards. Edwards took and early 4-0 lead but a single, brace of doubles and a five gave Bax the advantage 10-4, it was then Edwards and co who had to fightback to trail by one with 13 ends played. Bax again opened up a lead only to see Edwards cut the deficit back to one, with two ends left Bax and co still led by one but picked up a five to all but seal the win, Final score 25-20 to Bax. Dave Furness, Andrew Redfern, Matt Lever and Brian Lever raced to a 15-0 lead in their Fours final against Lloyd Bale, Graham Howes, Dave Sands and Chris Chapman. With 15 ends played the score was 23-5, Chapman and co reached double figures with a four, three and single but a treble from Lever on the 19th end saw the players shake hands, Lever winning 26-13.
The Open Singles started with a four to Dave Furness but Howard Wilkins fought back to trail 6-5. Furness again opened up the gap and again Wilkins cut it down to one. A four and three by Furness took the tie to 15-7, Wilkins was struggling with a back injury and conceded with the score on 17-8. Maureen Edwards & Colin Knapp were due to be playing Dave Furness and Howard Wilkins in the Open Pairs but with his back problem Wilkins pulled out and John Furness took his place. The game reached eight ends with the score eight all. Neither side could break clear, Furness was one ahead after 13 ends but the Furness brothers then took control, reeling off three singles, two doubles and a treble to take the game 21-10.
The Under 25s Singles encounter between Oliver Fowler and Craig Carter proved a thrilling encounter. It seemed that neither player could open up a lead, Fowler broke first to lead 14-6 but Carter replied to cut the score to 14-12. Fowler moved to within a shot of the title, leading 20-15, which became 20-16 then 20-18. It looked like Fowler was about to win, as he was holding shot. Carter fired and missed, Fowler drew another one in, Carter fired again causing the jack out of the rink killing the end. This time it was Carter holding shot and Fowler was drawing short. With his last wood Fowler was four down and fired, unfortunately he missed and Carter completed a stunning comeback to win 21-20.
The Under 25s Novices is played as two sets of nine ends and a three end tie break if needed. The competitors were Tom Wheeler and Abbie Ward. Four ends played Ward led 4-3 but Wheeler took a double, single and pair of threes to win the first set 12-4. The second set was one sided, Ward took a single in the first end but Wheeler scored two trebles, two doubles and two singles to take the second set 12-1 and the title 2-0 in sets. The Under 25s Pairs between Cormac Sheehan & Tom Wheeler and Ewan Mason & Jordan Ward was another tense affair. Ten all after nine ends, Mason and Ward opened up a four shot advantage with one end left. Sheehan and Wheeler nearly forced the extra end but fell one short, Mason and Ward winning 20-19.
The Over 60s Singles was a pretty one sided affair between Doug Pitcher and Roy Scott. Pitcher went from 5-1 to 16-2 on his way to a 21-6 win. Tony Hoffman and Colin Knapp faced Sandy Boulton and Brian Smith in the Over 60s Pairs. Knapp took the early lead but with eleven ends gone the scores were level on 10 all. Smith then took the lead, reaching 17 ends 17-11 up. A single and five brought the scores level on 17 all with two ends left. Hoffman and Knapp took both ends by a single to win 19-17.
The Mixed Pairs saw John Barnett and Maureen Edwards take on the surprise finalists Molly and Oliver Fowler, while Oliver has an Under 18 cap Molly is playing in her first proper season. It was the Fowler duo who took the lead, 11-3 after eight ends and 15-5 after ten. With 19 ends gone Barnett & Edwards pulled level and took a single to lead by one heading into the last end. Despite their best efforts the youngsters couldn't at least force an extra end, Barnett and Edwards winning 20-18. The Family Pairs saw two father and son combinations go head to head, Jordan & Steve Merrett taking on Nigel & Craig Carter. After six ends the tie was level on four a piece, the Merretts then took control opening up a ten shot lead with 12 ends gone. The Carters fought back, reaching 16 ends just three behind but the Merretts doubled their advantage and added another five to win 23-12.
The Mr & Mrs competition pitted Tony & Yvonne Bromfield against Sandy & Ron Boulton and it was the Boultons who made the early running, turning a fourth end 6-0 lead into 12-3 after ten. A brace of doubles pulled the Bromfields back but the Boultons replied with three singles. A five and four saw the Bromfields leading 17-16 with two ends left, the Boultons took the next end, the game all square going into the last end. Two shots sealed another tight final 19-17 for Sandy & Ron Boulton. The Singles Ladder was introduced this year and fills a gap between roll-ups and league games. Each month the entrants are split into divisions of 5 or 6 and each player plays against the others in that group. At the end of the month the groups are recalculated. The two most improved players played an hour long match on finals weekend. Ann Cleaver and Jim Dean were the inaugural participants. Cleaver took a 6-2 lead but Dean pulled it back to 6-6. The pair exchanged doubles before Cleaver hit two singles to win 10-8.
