Fourteen teams took to the green for the clubs gala in aid of the Brain Tumour Charity. A good afternoon of bowling went down to the wire to crown the winners.
Four teams finished the first round of games with nine points “Lan Mike”, “Maybes”, “Bilton Babes” and “Nicola Hood and Her Merry Men”. A point behind the lead pack were “Colin's Corinthians”, “Nomads” and “The Newbies”. “Bilton Babes” picked up another nine in their second game to lead heading into the break, one point behind them in joint second were “Maybes”, “Colin's Corinthians” and “Nomads”. Six points off top spot in fifth place were “The M T Heads”. A good final game saw “Colin's Corinthians” aka Martin Sandwell, Sue Edwards, Colin Loveitt and Tony Nisbet take top spot with twenty seven points. “Bilton Babes” had to settle for second place, two behind the winners and one ahead of “Nomads” in third. Fourth place with twenty two points were “Aija Came To”, one point clear of “Maybes” and “The M T Heads” in joint fifth. The club is introducing a change to coaching, to offer the best training there will now be 6 week courses to allow people to learn together. The aim of the course is to build skills and confidence so that new bowlers will feel more confident about taking part in other events the club offers including leagues.
The six week course will need to be pre-booked to avoid overbooking and a £15 fee paid in advance. The club will also be selling gift vouchers so you can give the gift of coaching to a friend or family member. Courses are due to start on the following dates: 12th November 2022 7th January 2023 18th February 2023 The club starting a triples league for Wednesday afternoons (2:30pm to 4:30pm) but with a twist, instead of being purely ends based the league will be played as sets, this means that there is always the chance for points even if you get off to a bad start.
This is open to members and non-members, league entries to be received by 8th November with the league to start on 16th November. The Club kicked off their charity gala seasons with ten teams helping to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. An entertaining afternoon saw it go down to the wire to find out who would finish top.
A good opening game saw ‘Bilton Babes’ lead the way with ten points, just behind them on nine points were ‘The One That Got Away’, ‘Nomads’ and ‘The "P" Artists’. Completing the top five with eight points were ‘Sue's Superstars’. A perfect game meant that ‘Sue's Superstars’ jumped to the top of the table with nineteen points, one ahead of ‘Bilton Babes’. With sixteen points ‘The One That Got Away’ were third, three points ahead of ‘The "P" Artists’ who were in turn two points clear of ‘Green Giants’. In the last round of games it was ‘The One That Got Away’ that picked up all eleven points but had to settle for second place, a point behind the winners with twenty-eight points ‘Sue's Superstars’. A poor final game meant ‘Bilton Babes’ finished third on twenty points, one ahead of ‘We Don't Know What To Call Ourselves’ and ‘Green Giants’ in joint fourth. The clubs final charity gala of the season was in aid of Myton Hospices, ten teams took to the green hoping to finish in top spot.
Two teams were on ten points after the first round of games ‘Ellie's Heroes’ and ‘Dolly Mixtures’. A point back in joint third and completing the group of teams who won their opening game were ‘Colin's Cubs’, ‘Here Again’ and ‘Cov Allstars’. Heading into the break ‘Here Again’ and ‘Colin's Cubs’ were joint top with nineteen points, in third place a point back were ‘Dolly Mixtures’. Twelve points meant ‘Rink Raiders’ were fourth, one point ahead of ‘Ellie's Heroes’ and ‘Cov All-stars’ in joint fifth. With the final set of fixtures played the crown went to ‘Colin's Cubs’ (Martin Sandwell, Ian Box, Colin Loveitt and Nigel Malka) with 29 points, second place with 28 points were ‘Here Again’. Seven points back were ‘Rink Raiders’ in fourth, joint fifth went to ‘Dolly Mixtures’ and ‘Cov Allstars’ with 20 points. The club’s latest charity gala saw twelve teams competing to raise funds Comic Relief. An exciting afternoon saw the gala decided by shot difference.
After the first round of games “Nameless” led the way with 10 points, one ahead of “Colin's Chaps”, “Play It Again S”, “Rink Raiders” and “Avengers”. “Jack's Team” complete the list of teams that won their opening fixture. Heading into the break “Play It Again S” moved into top spot with “Ellie's Heroes” two points back in second place. Third place a further four shot back went to “Jack's Team”, joint fourth a point behind third was held by “Cov Allstars” and “Rink Raiders”. With all games played both “Ellie's Heroes” and “Play It Again S” were tied on 27 points so it came down to shot difference, it was “Play It Again S” (Pam Wright, Judy Waite, Gary Waite and Mick Wright) that came out on top having a shot difference four more than “Ellie's Heroes” (Ellie Hodges, Ian Box, Tony Nisbett and Stuart Miles). Four points back in third place were “Jack's Team”, 20 points secured “Colin's Chaps” fourth place with fifth place going to “Avengers”. The Club welcomed a group of 30 Girl Guides from the Long Lawford and Newbold units to give the sport of bowls a try. The majority of the group were Brownies (7-10 years old) with some Guides (10-14 years old) after a short session with volunteers from the club showing them the basics of bowling they split into groups to take on three out of six challenges.
The challenges ranged from two forms of target bowls, bowling to a get the wood into a specific area, controlling weight to knock the bails off a cricket type stumps, getting close to a set point and delivering the jack and then bowling a wood to it. The evening was filled with laughter as the girls had an enjoyable time and when asked said that they would come again if the session was ran again. The start of February brought fourteen teams together to take part in the gala in aid of Cancer Research UK. A fun afternoon helped ease away the chilly weather with a twist at the end.

After the second round of fixtures “Greenys Go” had moved to pole position, one point clear of “Ellies Heroes”. Four points further back in third were “4 M8s”, who in turn led “Celts” by a point. In joint fifth one point behind fourth were “Rink Raiders”, “The Committee”, “Old Uns”, “The Odds not Sods”, “Sods & Odds”, “Fab Four” and “Odds & Sods”. A good win for “Ellies Heroes” aka Ellie H, Stuart Miles, Ian Box and Oliver Fowler took them to top spot, winning the gala with 25 points. Behind them on 22 points were “4 M8s”, a point further back in third were “Greenys Go”. Joint fourth with 20 points was “Rink Raiders” and “The Odds not Sods”. The next gala is on Saturday 5th March starting at 2:30pm and is in aid of Comic Relief, these galas are open to all, members and non-members and are an enjoyable way to have a go at bowls. The club’s first charity gala of 2022 was in aid of the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance. The format is three games of six ends, five points for a win, three for a draw and one point for every end won. Fourteen teams took to the green to see who was a high flyer and who was permanently grounded.

The two other teams to win their opening game were ‘Killer’ and ‘Squirrel Nutkins’. Heading into the break ‘Avengers’ had moved into top spot with nineteen points. Two shots back in joint second place were ‘Three Plus One’ and ‘River Raiders’. Fourth place was a five-way tie between ‘Jaguar Ladies’, ‘Fannys Fantom Flan Flingers’, ‘The Believers’, ‘Team Sue’ and ‘Nappis 4’. With all bowls bowled ‘River Raiders’ aka Brian Webber, Tina Grey, Mark Noble and Paul Sharp took the crown with twenty-eight points. Second place, six points back, were ‘The Believers’. Joint third, a further point behind, were ‘Fannys Fantom Flan Flingers’ and ‘Team Sue’, while twenty points secured ‘Avengers’ and ‘Colins Corinthians’ joint fifth place. Thornfields next charity gala is on Saturday 5th February at 2:30pm and is aid of Cancer Research, anyone interested in playing should contact the bar staff. |
