The penultimate charity gala in the club's winter season was in aid of Arthritis Research, a full set of 16 teams took to the carpet to help raise funds.
A perfect game by “Diversity” saw them take all 8 points and top spot, one point clear of “The Young Chicks”, “X Rail” and “Red Rugby Rogues” in joint second. “MA'AM” and “Thornfield Thunderers” completed the top five with six points. Heading into the midway break “X Rail” and “The Young Chicks” were joint first, one point ahead of “Red Rugby Rogues” and “Thornfield Thunderers” in joint third. A point further back in fifth place were “Plonkers”. With plenty of cakes available for sale, the bowlers returned to the battle refreshed and well-fed. Heading into the final set of games there was a three way tie for top spot “Plonkers”, “Red Rugby Rogues” and “X Rail” all on 20 points. Fourth spot was held by “Thornfield Thunderers” with 19 points, while “The Young Chicks” were in fifth three points further behind. After the last games were finished two teams had 27 points, since there can only be one winner the title was decided on shots scored. With 42 shots “Plonkers” aka Bev Bale, Paul Bale, Dave Sands and Lloyd Bale took the crown ahead of “Red Rugby Rogues” who scored 38 shots. In third place on 26 points were “Thornfield Thunderers”, 21 points secured joint fourth for “The Young Chicks” and “X Rail”. A special mention goes to the bottom placed team of Darren French, Andy Gordon, Matt and Luke Walker, playing as “The Underdogs”. These were complete rookies who had had only a couple of roll ups but took part in the spirit of charity. After an impressive league campaign in the regional stage of the Wessex Trophy, Rugby Thornfield finished top of the Midland Region, winning all but one of their games. Their opponents for the first round of the play-off were Malvern who qualified as a wild card from the North Region.
The home rinks were Dave Furness, Brian Smith, Dave Sands and Howard Wilkins; Oliver Fowler, Graham Howes, Chris Chapman and Liam Pearcey. The travelling rinks consisted of Trevor Wells, Matt Lever, Jordan Ward and Darren Ward; Keith Mason, Nigel Carter, Calvin Wells and Craig Carter. The home rinks had mixed fortunes in the first half of the tie. Pearcey leading 10-3 but Wilkins 7-13 down. Away from home was better, Carter 11-4 up and Ward all square on 8 all. With fifteen ends gone Wilkins and co trailed by 5 but Pearcey's rink had had their lead cut to one. Both away rinks led, Ward by 6 and Carter 10. Heading into the final three ends the home rinks were cancelling each other out, a status that remained until the end, Pearcey and co 21-16 win matched by Wilkins rink losing 15-20. Which meant this tie would decided by the rinks playing at Malvern. With Ward leading by 5 and Carter 11 after eighteen ends it was looking good for Thornfield. An even finish saw Ward's rink take a 20-16 victory, while Carter and co sealed a 22-11 win. This gave Thornfield an overall 78-63 victory and passage through to the quarter finals and a clash with Plymouth at the neutral venue of Bristol. The latest charity gala at Rugby Thornfield Indoor Bowls Club was in aid of Meningitis Now. Fourteen teams took to the carpet all trying to clinch top spot.
With the first round of games completed “I Haven't a Clue” and “The Inbetweeners” were in joint first, one point clear of “The Dav Chavs” and “The Newbies” in joint third. Fifth place was shared between “Just Trying”, “Rail Roaders” and “Sue's Mob”. Heading into the half-time break “The Inbetweeners” took a one point lead over “The Dav Chavs” and “The Newbies”, “I Haven't a Clue”, “Just Trying” and “Sue's Mob” in joint fourth completed the leading pack. Three game down and “The Newbies” took top spot, two points ahead of second place “The Inbetweeners”. “I Haven't a Clue”, and “The Dav Chavs” shared third place and in joint fifth were “Rail Roaders” and “Sue's Mob”. With the last bowls delivered three teams were tied on 19 points, “Just Trying” and “The Newbies” were joined by “Fanny's Fabulous Flan Flingers” who put on a very late surge. There can be only one winner so it came down to total shots scored, with 23 shots Pat Quirke, Andrew Smith, Bruce Truman and Nigel Hewitson aka “Fanny's Fabulous Flan Flingers” took the title, “Just Trying” were second with 20 shots and third went to “The Newbies” with 16 shots. Fourth place went to “The Inbetweeners” and in joint fifth were “The Dav Chavs” and “The Young Chicks”. |
