The Club welcomed a group of 30 Girl Guides from the Long Lawford and Newbold units to give the sport of bowls a try. The majority of the group were Brownies (7-10 years old) with some Guides (10-14 years old) after a short session with volunteers from the club showing them the basics of bowling they split into groups to take on three out of six challenges.
The challenges ranged from two forms of target bowls, bowling to a get the wood into a specific area, controlling weight to knock the bails off a cricket type stumps, getting close to a set point and delivering the jack and then bowling a wood to it. The evening was filled with laughter as the girls had an enjoyable time and when asked said that they would come again if the session was ran again. The start of February brought fourteen teams together to take part in the gala in aid of Cancer Research UK. A fun afternoon helped ease away the chilly weather with a twist at the end.
Four teams were all on nine points after the first set of games “Celts”, “Ellies Heroes”, “Sods & Odds” and “The Committee”. “Avengers”, “Old Uns” and “Greenys Go” also won their opening game and were a point behind the leaders. After the second round of fixtures “Greenys Go” had moved to pole position, one point clear of “Ellies Heroes”. Four points further back in third were “4 M8s”, who in turn led “Celts” by a point. In joint fifth one point behind fourth were “Rink Raiders”, “The Committee”, “Old Uns”, “The Odds not Sods”, “Sods & Odds”, “Fab Four” and “Odds & Sods”. A good win for “Ellies Heroes” aka Ellie H, Stuart Miles, Ian Box and Oliver Fowler took them to top spot, winning the gala with 25 points. Behind them on 22 points were “4 M8s”, a point further back in third were “Greenys Go”. Joint fourth with 20 points was “Rink Raiders” and “The Odds not Sods”. The next gala is on Saturday 5th March starting at 2:30pm and is in aid of Comic Relief, these galas are open to all, members and non-members and are an enjoyable way to have a go at bowls. |
