A good start saw Thornfield leading on three out of four rinks to give an overall seven shot advantage. By the midway point Bromfield's rink had overturned their deficit to lead by a shot but Redfern and co now trailed by five. Over in Bromsgrove Edwards and co led by two while Bax's rink were two down, giving Bromsgrove an overall four shot lead.
With three ends left to play the rink scores were Bromfield 16-13, Redfern 13-20, Edwards 20-14 and Bax 15-15, Thornfield ahead by two overall. In a tense finish Bax and co reclaimed the lead to win 19-16, Bromfield's rink held off a late rally to win 17-16. Thornfield were given extra breathing space when Edwards and co took seven shots at the expense of two to win 27-16. With two ends to play Redfern's rink were two shots adrift but when they took the twentieth end with a single it meant Bromsgrove could no longer win, Thornfield took the fixture 78-69 and now face Welford in the next round.
Bromsgrove also provided the opposition in the Mason Trophy. Mary Entwistle Jean Sands, Elaine Cresswell and Yvonne Bromfield were the home rink while Trudy Windsor, Pat Dahlgren, Pat Bax and Maureen Edwards played away.
Neither side could make home advantage count in the first ten ends, Bromfield down 3-11 with Edwards winning 9-6. Heading into the final three ends Bromfield and co were still struggling, 11-18 down, but Edwards' rink had increased their lead to 22-8, giving Thornfield a seven shot advantage. Bromsgrove's home rink took a treble on the final end, Edwards finishing 23-12 up. Heading into their final end Bromfield were 11-21 down, the overall lead one shot in Thornfield's favour. Bromfield and co knew they could not lose the last end, dropping one would see the scores level and force an extra end, more than one and the game was Bromsgroves. A good finish saw Bromfield and co pick up four shots to finish 15-21 down but more importantly helping Thornfield win 38-33 overall to progress to the next round where they will face City of Birmingham.
